Some notes on pianos for use in the church

The classic piano-purchase mistake made by so many well-meaning individuals in churches and institutions today is the purchase of an instrument that was not designed for the level of use a piano generally experiences in the church/institution environment.  I remember when my wife directed choir for a well-know Christian high school where we once lived.  Someone had purchased several well-know Japanese-brand upright pianos for the music department.  They looked good and sounded great the first year or so and then became more and more difficult to maintain.  The sound became harsh and the instruments developed action problems.  Why?  Pianos made for the home market are manufactured to look and sound their absolute best the day they are purchased.  This means the instrument is built to behave and sound as though it were already broken in.  Hammers are artificially hardened to emulate the hardness of a hammer that is at its prime, played-in condition.  Likewise, the action may have plastic components.  Plastic does not change dimension with humidity and does not need to be broken in.  The problem is that artificially hardened hammers and plastic action parts do not wear well.  Other production shortcuts surface as problems when a piano is subjected to heavy use.

Here at Hammond Central, our objective is to provide our church customers with the best professional-level instrument for the money.  This was no problem when we were looking for a world-class instrument for the discriminating pianist.  Sauter Pianos are one of the world’s absolute best.  Each instrument is built individually to exacting detail, showing up even the best made American piano.  Finding an instrument for the church that may not have the budget for a world-class instrument was another matter.  We found our answer in Wendl & Lung.  We offer Wendl & Lung’s full line of instruments but stock three pianos, in particular:  The Professional Series 161 and 178 Grand Pianos and the 122 Universal Upright Piano.  Follow the links on this page to learn more about Sauter and Wendl & Lung.  Should you have questions, we are only as far away as your telephone.  Click on the logos below.
